Getting Going

Student Safety Contract

Industry Standard Safety Expectations

Students will be required to read and sign this safety contract.

Science is a hands-on laboratory class. However, science activities may have potential hazards. We will use some equipment and animals that may be dangerous if not handled properly. Safety in the science classroom is an important part of the scientific process. To ensure a safe classroom, a list of rules has been developed and is called the Science Safety Contract. These rules must be followed at all times. Additional safety instructions will be given for each activity.

No science student will be allowed to participate in science activities until this contract has been signed by both the student and a parent or guardian.

Draw a Scientist

What do you think a scientist looks like?

In this assignment you will draw what you think a scientist looks like. Don't worry if you don't feel confident drawing. This assignment is't about how well you draw, it is about your ideas.

The Metric System

Bill Nye Measurement Graphic Organizer

Compare stuff in our univers and make observations using measurement!

This is the graphic organizer we use while watching the video. We keep track of what we already knew, and all the things we see in the video that are new to us. There is also a short quiz to see if we were paying close attention.

Metric System Stations Lab

How to use the metric system

Here your group will practice metric measurement of items at the lab stations. This will include all forms of measruement-length, volume,  and mass/weight.

Too Many Measurements

This is a homework activity

Before there were standards for measurment people used all kinds of ways to measure things. From a Cord and a Rick to a Nibble, from a span to a stone, many of the measurements we have had in the past have been unusual and even found only in certain areas of the world. In this activity, you get the chance to invent your own system of measurement and try it out.

Meaningful Metrics

Metric System Units in Science

Getting familiar with the different units of measurement using the metric system. Lab will Include volume, length, mass/weight, and temperature.

Metric System Practice

Homework

In this activity, you will be practicing applying the various metric system units. Including where someone might use these units in real life.

Observation & Inference

Visual Observations & Inferences

Using your eyes do decide.

We wil use our sense of sight to hone our understanding of the differences between observing and inferring.

Sensory Stations

Observation and Inference

In this lab we will use all of our senses to try and guess the identity of certain "mystery" items.  Here you will have a chance to practice your understanding of the difference between observation and inference. You will also be using the process of scientific inquiry.
