in-class activities & homework:

The Diversity of Cells

Diversity on a cellular level!

-Different cells are found in different  organisms.

-Different cells are even found within one type of organism.

Organelle Notes Graphic Organizer

Record descriptions and functions of cell organelles

This tool will help you recird and organize information about a cell's parts.  There is a space for both the description and the function of the organelles.  You can also make a quick sketch to help you remember each structure.

Explore Learning: Cell Structure

Review the parts of a cell online.

Log into the Explore Learning website and launch the "cell structure" gizmo.  This online tool will help you review and learn the various organelles commonly found in cells.  The question sheet will guide you through the activity.  You can even quiz yourself at the end if you'd like.  Click the link above to check out the Explore Learning website.

Angevine As A Cell

Compare your school to a living cell

Walk through the halls of Angevine Middle School and compare the structures you see to the structures inside of a cell.  The graphic organizer and the map willl guide you through this exercise in analogies.  You may even get to explore some places that you didn't kinow existed ion your school!

Create a "city" using cell organelles

What do a highway and endoplasmic reticulum have in common?  Well, they both aid in transportation of materials.  Using the parts of cells and their functions, you will draw analogies that relate the organelles of cells to parts of a city.  There are several examples included to help jump-start your ideas.

CELL DIVISION COMIC

UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS OF CELL DIVISION

Using a comic book graphic organizer, you get to create your own comic strip showing all the stages of cell division from interphase, to Cytokinesis. Included are some examples from previous years. Don't wory about your drawing ability. Let the inner cartoonist in you come out. Another chance to have fun and learn something along the way!

Plant & Animal Comparison Lab

Similarities and differences between plant and animals  cells.

Students use microscopes and everything they have learned about plant and animal cells to compare the two. There is a chance to actually see some of the organelles and other structures that are found in both plant and animal cells.

Cancer Cells

Students read about the origins of a cancer cell.

From the origins of a cancer cell to how it is spread and treated, and prevented. Students are also asked to think about some of the ethics around todays complex health care issues.
